Cleaning Shower Doors with Vinegar

People swear by the incredible soap scum-slaying ability of distilled vinegar (heated first) mixed with grease-cutting dish detergent, such as Dawn, in equal proportions. This works for most showers, but use caution when cleaning shower doors with vinegar: If your shower is made of stone, the vinegar could damage it. Instead, mix some liquid soap with baking soda until it’s the consistency of frosting. Scrub this eco-friendly cleaner onto the glass shower door with a nonscratch sponge.

The Best Time to Clean Shower Doors

Clean the shower door as you’re finishing up your shower. This is the best time to clean your shower surround, since the warm water has already loosened up the grime. Plus, you don’t have to worry about getting messy or wet. Use a sponge or foam cleaning pad such as a Magic Eraser, and you won’t need to mess around with additional cleaning products or toxic chemicals. When it comes to cleaning shower doors, walls, and floors, we’re all about tackling multiple chores at once!

Clean Your Shower With Citrus

It’s time to say goodbye to annoying streaks. We’ve got the best way to clean glass shower doors without residue. Cut a lemon in half. Dip one half in baking soda, then rub on both sides of the glass door. The acid in the lemon reacts with the baking soda, making a sudsy foam.

“Once you get the glass clean, I like rubbing it with a little lemon oil, too,” she says. “The oil will repel the water so the soap doesn’t dry on the glass.” As a bonus, lemon always smells nice—much nicer than bleach.

Tools for Shower Cleaning

The edges of your shower door need attention, too. These creases are a prime target for mold and trapped soap scum if you forget about them while cleaning shower doors. Use a toothbrush for scrubbing the metal frame around your shower door. A paint scraper can help get the gunk where the metal meets the shower or door, and a razor, carefully and gently applied, can scrape mineral spots off flat glass. Be sure to use a clean, sharp blade and hold it at a 45-degree angle to the surface to avoid scratching the glass.

Squeegee Your Shower

Prevention is key when knowing how to keep glass shower doors clean. Mold and mildew won’t appear if you don’t give them a damp environment. “The best thing you can do is squeegee the door after each use,”. Keep one hanging in your shower to make it easy—and remind family members to do it after they shower. A basic squeegee costs less than $5 and saves you lots of time and frustration. “It’ll help keep hard-water deposits from building up, so you won’t have to scrub so much later,” she says. Leaving the door open after a shower will also help dry it out.

DIY Daily Shower Spray

Using a shower spray daily builds time between deep cleans. Make your own cleaner on the cheap—and without harsh chemicals—by mixing 1 cup water, 1/2 cup vinegar, a little dish soap, and 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil, for scent. Keep it in the shower and spray the glass door down after squeegeeing. (Again, skip the vinegar if you have a stone tile shower.)

So, how often should you clean your shower, anyway? If you keep up with regular light maintenance, you should only have to deep clean every few weeks. Here’s a good shower cleaning schedule to follow for the above tasks:

Every Day: After using the shower, you should squeegee, use your DIY spray cleaner, and leave the door open to air out.

Weekly: Give your whole shower a wipe down once a week with a sponge or your Magic Eraser.

Once a Month: It’s time for a deep clean. Thoroughly scrub your entire shower, being sure to get in any nooks and crannies.

10 things to consider when shopping for a Frameless Shower Door

Are you finally ready to upgrade to a Frameless Shower Door?
Before we start, there are some important items to consider:
  • Safety
  • Security
  • Aesthetics
  • Functionality
Now we need to think who?
There are many places you could purchase a frameless shower door but consulting with a true professional, who has done thousands of these, could be the best decision you can make…
We have seen and experienced EVERYTHING you could imagine from styles and hardness of what tile it is being mounted to and which is the best direction to have a door swing.
To give you a better perspective, I have compiled this Top Ten List of Things You Need to Know When Looking for A Frameless Shower Door.”

1.) First, how big is the opening that you need glass for? Do you want a hinged style door or a sliding style?

This is important because it depends upon the amount of room you have AND the type of look that you want.

2.) What are you willing to spend?

Frameless shower doors have a very wide range of products…all are considered “frameless.”
Generally speaking, the sliding doors cost less than most swing style doors, although there are some exceptions.

3.) How often do you use this particular shower? Is this a spare bathroom or the Master? Will this be for guests, children, someone elderly?

Each answer could help you make a different decision.

4.) Does your new enclosure need towel bars attached through the glass?

These are ideal for the hospitality industry as well as showers that people use when coming back from the beach or swimming at a pool.
Having a place to hang a wet bathing suit INSIDE the shower is very appealing to many buyers.

5.) How convenient is it to turn on your water before entering the shower?

This common activity is often overlooked when consumers purchase their units online.
Generally, that is not a question asked by online merchantsBeware….

6.) Do you know where the studding is in the walls?

On frameless shower doors that use “wall mounted hinges,” this could pose a real problem.
Most companies offer 3/8″ tempered glass for their units which means that the hinge side of the door will be secured to the side wall and if you don’t know what “blocking” is in the wall, you may be hanging a lot of weight off the tile and durarock only.
This is not a safe scenario as this is a heavy unit and the constant pressure will likely have the door pull away from the wall causing an unsafe situation.

7.) What thickness glass do you want?

Most frameless shower door companies only offer 3/8″ thick  glass even though 1/2″ thick  is also available. How the glass is hinged and how it is supported makes all the difference in the world.

8.) Do you want “generic clear” glass or “ultra clear” glass?

Most companies don’t offer the “ultra clear” glass because it comes at a higher price, but it diminishes the amount of greenish tint that you see when you use “generic clear” glass.
If you have light color tiles, the greenish tint is more pronounced…Most decorators and designers prefer the “ultra clear” option.

9.) Are you using multiple shower heads or overhead rain heads?

The angle of where the water source is coming from is extremely important to identify early.
If the shower is spraying at unusual angles, the location of the door opening is very important. A frameless shower door professional will always discuss this with you when selecting your solution.

10.) Will the door be mounted on a curb or directly on the floor?

This is a MAJOR item to consider and it makes a difference as to what type of hinge is used and where the door should be mounted.

To conclude:

These ten items need your attention so that when the time comes to actually make that purchase of a new frameless shower door, you will be CONFIDENT that you made the right decision.
Always make sure that any company that you choose is fully licensed and insured to perform this type of work as some insurance companies will not pay claims in the event that something was installed incorrectly or an accident happens and they do not have coverage. No shower doors that are bought online and shipped to your home from out of state offer a license installer to perform the most crucial part of the job.
A frameless shower door will add value and beauty to any shower but making sure that you address these ten topics will give you many years of great function.

So what is the most common configuration of Shower Doors we install ??

Over the years, we see trends of all kinds. Whether it be the color of fixtures or different types of glass, trends do exist. But another commonality we see is configurations. Wall hinged doors with adjacent stationary panels are perhaps, and always have been the most popular. We install these units so often that I figured I would blog. Here is an example of some of these shower doors installed. One of these may be exactly what you are looking for ??
